Black Tusk Percussion: Digital Owner’s Manual
1. Welcome to the Tusk Family
Thank you for investing in Black Tusk Percussion. You’ve purchased a precision-crafted tool designed to withstand the rigors of performance while maintaining a boutique, artisan aesthetic. Because our products use natural Canadian hardwoods and high-grade metals, they require specific care to ensure a lifetime of service.
Prehistoric Strength. Modern Precision.
2. Installation & Setup
Bass Drum Beaters (Foundation, Signature, Elite)
Shaft Seating: Ensure the 1/4" stainless steel shaft is fully inserted into your pedal’s beater hub.
Tightening: Tighten your pedal’s set screw firmly. If using a memory lock, ensure it is flush against the hub to prevent "beater fly-out."
Strike Face Alignment: Adjust the angle of the beater head so the leather or wood face hits the drumhead as flush (flat) as possible. This ensures maximum punch and longevity of the material.
Drum Weights
Mounting: Mounting: Replace your existing tension rod with the provided longer tension rod. Thread the rod through the weight’s mounting hole using the included washers, spacers, and rubber grommets to ensure a snug, vibration-free fit.
Placement: Mount to any tension rod on the top (batter) hoop. Experiment with different lugs to find the specific dampening "sweet spot" for your drum’s overtones.
Bass Drum Patches
Mounting: Use the provided alcohol wipe to thoroughly clean the impact area of the drumhead. Once completely dry, peel the backing and press the patch firmly from the center outward to eliminate air bubbles.
Placement: Align the patch so the beater strikes the center of the material. For double pedals, ensure the patch is centered between both beater impact points.
Wing Nuts
Mounting: Thread the wing nut onto the cymbal stand or hardware post. Tighten until the cymbal is secure but still has enough "room to breathe" and swing naturally.
Placement: Designed for use on all standard 8mm threaded cymbal tilters and accessory arms.
3. Wood Care & Environmental Safety
Wood is a "living" material. It expands and contracts based on its environment.
Humidity: Keep your gear between 35% and 55% humidity. Extreme dryness (hot cars) can cause wood to "check" or crack. Extreme moisture can cause the grain to swell.
Temperature: Avoid leaving your gear in a vehicle overnight in freezing or high-heat conditions.
Cleaning: Use a soft, dry microfiber cloth. If the wood looks "thirsty" after a year of use, a tiny amount of food-grade mineral oil can be applied to unpainted surfaces—but avoid the strike face.
4. Leather Care & Performance
Leather is a natural fiber that provides a unique organic "thud" and exceptional durability, but it requires proper care to maintain its grip and texture.
Moisture Control: Keep leather components dry. If they become wet from humidity or spills, allow them to air dry naturally at room temperature. Never use a hairdryer or high heat, as this can cause the leather to become brittle and crack.
Adhesion (Patches): For adhesive-backed leather patches, ensure the drumhead is cleaned with the provided alcohol wipe before application. Once applied, avoid peeling and re-sticking, as this weakens the bond and can lead to edge-lift during play.
Surface Maintenance: Over time, the leather strike face may "burnish" or become smooth from impact. This is normal and often improves the sound. If the leather becomes excessively dirty, wipe gently with a slightly damp cloth—avoid harsh chemical cleaners or soaps which can break down the natural oils.
5. Safety & Liability
High-Impact Use: Our products are designed for musical performance. Do not use beaters or sticks for any purpose other than striking a drum or percussion instrument.
Inspection: Before every performance, inspect the bond between the wood head and the stainless steel shaft. If you detect any "wiggle" or loose epoxy, discontinue use and contact us immediately.
Disclaimer: Black Tusk Percussion is not responsible for damage caused to drumheads, hardware, or other gear due to improper installation or excessive force.
6. The Black Tusk Guarantee (Warranty)
We stand by our craftsmanship.
90-Day Warranty: Covers epoxy bond failure, hardware defects, and manufacturing flaws.
Exclusions: Does not cover normal wear and tear, "rim-shot" damage to wooden heads, or environmental cracking due to improper storage.
